The sixth installment of the Heartland Monitor Poll explores how Americans define success, their perceptions of the current state of our economy, and their shifts in values and ambitions as we approach the mid-term elections and the possibility of a further economic downturn.

As mentioned in a National Journal Feature Article, this survey found that Americans are even less optimistic about the state of the economy and direction of the country than they were earlier this year. Americans are feeling the pain of a lengthy economic downturn and are looking for leaders to strive toward a common objective of making our country work for all citizens.

However, despite the call for collective action, Americans still recognize the importance of personal responsibility and believe that their own actions are likely to drive personal financial success.
